CHAPTER 7 - PROTOCOL 1

Finite-to-Infinite Audit

TIME60-75 minutes
OWNERPrincipal and leadership team
ARTIFACTFinite-to-infinite findings + one priority shift
SUCCESS CRITERIA
  1. The team distinguishes necessary finite milestones from the larger enduring purpose.
  2. Current incentives, language, measures, and decisions are examined as evidence.
  3. The audit identifies where short-term success may weaken long-term capability or trust.
  4. One concrete shift has an owner, evidence source, and return date.
IMPLEMENTATION STEPS
01

Name the enduring purpose

Clarify the contribution or condition the work must continue advancing beyond the current year, leader, or initiative.

02

Surface the finite game

Identify deadlines, rankings, targets, initiatives, and pressures shaping current behavior and attention.

03

Test for distortion

Examine where finite demands support the purpose and where they encourage shortcuts, dependency, fragmentation, or symbolic completion.

04

Make one infinite shift

Redesign one measure, meeting, decision rule, ownership pattern, or learning loop and schedule the return.

REFLECTION PROMPTS
  • What are we treating as an ending that should be a learning point?
  • Which short-term win could create a long-term weakness?
  • What capability should remain after this priority changes?
EQUITY GUARDRAILS
  • Infinite thinking does not excuse missed legal, safety, equity, or accountability obligations.
  • Do not ask people to endure unsustainable workload in the name of long-term purpose.
  • Study who receives the benefits and who bears the costs of both short- and long-term choices.
